Additional Readings

While in class, I try to provide a wide variety of resources, acknowledging those with greater knowledge than my own, but on this page I try to share even more resources that can be of value to my students.  There is no way for me to devote as much time as I'd like to these topics in the classroom, but I am always happy to talk shop and love to share the good information I have found.

Aperture:
Digital Photography School's excellent article on aperture.

Another Digital Photography School article, specifically focusing on shallow depth of field in portraits.

Camera Settings:
Adorama's Comprehensive List of Creative Settings in a wide variety of cameras.

Composition and Storytelling:
I have been thinking a lot lately about simplification of images for storytelling purposes, and I was struck by this article from B & H Photo on just that topic.

Lenses:
Cambridge in Color's article about the technical aspects of how lenses work, how focal lenght affect's angle of view, chromatic abberation and apertures.

Macro Photography:
Basic Macro Photography is a website that shows specific directions on photographing a variety of small objects, from insects to wine bottles.  While not as useful for composition purposes, it has quite a bit of good information on setting up shots of items such as jewelry and coins using inexpensive supplies.

Photography Groups:
Flickr has a wide variety of groups, and you can select one that meets your interest.  Some groups may be focused for more experienced photographers, but there are plenty of groups focused on beginning photographers, such as this one that talks about child photography.

Posing:
Katsoulis Photography's excellent guide to maternity photography and posing.  He puts posing principles in easy to understand words, and uses extensive photographs to illustrate his principles.

Sean T Noonan's Posing Guide--  A more general guide that discusses issues with different facial types and gender.

This article discusses male vs. female posing and is a quicker and easier read.

This widely used pdf shows an extensive amount of sample poses for males, females and couples.  One warning, while searching for posing tips, it can be difficult to find samples that are appropriate for all audiences, so please use caution.

Shutter Speed:
A pretty good article on shutter speed.  As one of the easiest to understand aspects of camera usage, there are less really great articles that make shutter speed intriguing, but this one does a good basic job.
